FINCA is a Leader in the Protection of Microfinance Clients

FINCA and other leading microfinance institutions (MFI) worldwide have drafted and endorsed a statement in support of the Smart Microfinance Campaign, a core set of Client Protection Principles to help MFIs practice good ethics and smart business. These pro-client codes of conduct and practices include: avoidance of over-indebtedness, transparent and responsible pricing, appropriate collections practices, ethical staff behavior, mechanisms for redress of grievances, and privacy of client data.

FINCA Azerbaijan Surpasses 100,000 Client Mark
FINCA Reaches Record Number of Clients Worldwide

FINCA Azerbaijan recently became the third program in FINCA’s 21-country global network to pass the 100,000-client milestone—after FINCA Mexico and FINCA Kyrgyzstan. Founded in 1998, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, FINCA Azerbaijan is helping transform the lives of over 500,000 children and adults struggling in poverty.

One year after Haiti’s devastating earthquake, FINCA’s small loans are providing hope and opportunity for nearly 8,000 clients, empowering them to build businesses, create jobs and improve living standards for their families, estimated at approximately 40,000 children and adults, while helping rebuild the Haitian economy.

FINCA Programs Honored by Key Rating Organizations

FINCA’s programs in Ecuador and Mexico were recently ranked in the Top 100 by Microfinance Americas for their outstanding outreach, transparency and efficiency. The publication of the Multilateral Investment Fund of the Inter-American Development Bank and the Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX) ranked FINCA Ecuador #22 and FINCA Mexico #33.

FINCA Nicaragua and FINCA Honduras clients benefiting from a USDA Food for Progress grant

USDA officials visited FINCA Nicaragua clients benefiting from a USDA Food for Progress grant, which has enabled the program to expand its outreach and lending to agricultural clients. The USDA also announced a new grant for FINCA Honduras, which will enable it to expand outreach to rural clients and offer specialized loans for farmers to buy equipment, undergo training, and improve their efficiency.

FINCA Kyrgyzstan Forced to Close Offices

Violence has, again, erupted in southern Kyrgyzstan, resulting in more than 170 deaths and nearly 1,800 injured, according to Kyrgyzstan's Health Ministry. To ensure staff and client safety, FINCA’s offices in the Osh and Jalal-Abat regions were closed for several days, but operations continued in the Central and Northern regions. Staff joined in international relief efforts by sending humanitarian aid to Osh, traveling to the airport to load boxes of food onto planes.

Finding Inspiration in the Courage of Haitians

FINCA Haiti’s country director wrote last week about visiting clients in the decimated town of Petit-Goâve: “These resilient people still march on…they inspire me. The sheer magnitude of this event has made us reconsider our role, and allowed us to expand our mission to help in any way we can, so we are distributing food on behalf of the World Food Program, and giving tents to our homeless staff.”

Amid the rubble, hope remains for FINCA Haiti staff and clients

We’ve finally been able to get some reports from the field that we want to share with you, our dedicated supporters, which provide a glimpse into the dedication of our staff and Village Banking clients.
Nearly all of FINCA Haiti’s 180 staff showed up for work the day after the January 12th earthquake.

FINCA Founder John Hatch Honored by National Peace Corps Association

The National Peace Corps Association has named FINCA’s founder and former Peace Corps volunteer John Hatch the 2009 recipient of the prestigious Sargent Shriver Award for Distinguished Humanitarian Service, presented to a volunteer who continues making sustained and distinguished contributions to humanitarian causes, or whose innovative, social entrepreneurial actions bring about significant, long-term change.
